We've reached over 10% of our goal- 15 days left!
Thank you so much to those of you who have donated to support students hoping to serve New Orleans during their spring break! With only 15 days left in the campaign, we wanted to share more about why ServeUP NOLA is such an indispensable experience to us.
As mentioned in the description, students spend the days working on-site and nights reading scripture to find intersection between faith and social justice. In addition, they will have many opportunities to explore the city independently as well as on tour given by locals. One major concept students learn about is the impact of systemic discrimination that perpetuates injustice in communities like the Lower Ninth Ward. From food deserts to gentrification to environmental policy, students have a chance to see first-hand the extreme difference between impoverished neighborhoods and the French Quarter.
Students also witness firsthand the resilience of locals who survived Hurricane Katrina, returned to the place they call home, and continue to work to build up the community others neglect. This trip challenges students to recognize the reality of injustice in so many communities while maintaining hope because change is possible. Change begins with your help.
Photo: Natural wetlands around New Orleans help slow hurricanes to reduce it's impact, but since Mississippi River-Gulf Outlet (MRGO) was obliterated by levees and toxic chemicals, the waters contributed to the extensive flooding during Hurricane Katrina.
