What is the purpose of the BUNITED Student Diversity Conference?

The purpose of this student-led conference is to provide a safe environment to enhance attendees' cultural competency by recognizing and understanding the social issues that prevail in our society. The mission of the BUNITED Student Diversity Conference is to promote the collaboration of clubs and organizations within Boston University and the wider Boston collegiate community. Through the use of workshops, discussions, and self-reflection we strive to identify similarities and differences within our communities in order to create a more welcoming community on our college campuses. We seek to encourage individual growth, advance essential leadership skills, open individuals to new perspectives, and empower students so that they become educated leaders who advocate for social justice and equality both on and off their college campuses. We hope that this conference will begin a legacy within Boston University's undergraduate community to prioritize cultural competence.

Description of the Theme:

At this year’s BUNITED Student Diversity Conference, our goal is to emphasize the importance of our generation’s voice in the world today. We believe this theme adequately follows in the footsteps of the previous year’s theme “We are the Pieces to the Puzzle”. We recognize that we must constantly work to build strong multicultural foundations within our communities. Continuing on, we would now like to focus on the importance of our generation’s voice. Through our theme “The Time is Now, The Power is Yours”, we hope to simultaneously develop a sense of urgency and empowerment within our peers. In the midst of social injustices we can no longer be silent and we can no longer be passive. Instead, we need to make our voices heard, as there is power among the youth. As young people we must recognize our power to change the world. At this year’s conference we wish to focus on each individual’s capacity to make a change in society today. As we come together as one we strive to provide a platform for productive conversation and bring new perspectives to light. Most importantly, we hope that each attendee leaves our conference recognizing the power that they possess within.
