BUHPC Supercomputing Competition

BUHPC stands for Boston University High Performance Computing, and we're a student club that is dedicated to education, research, and competitions related to high performance computing. We embody the spirit of passion and thirst for knowledge by seeking to learn more about super computing and optimizing applications outside of the classroom. At BUHPC, we're all about having undergraduate students getting hands on with equipment and applications that are typically unavailable to students apart from research and specific companies. We're all about education!

This June 2016, we are heading to Frankfurt, Germany to represent Boston University as one of 12 finalists at the International Student Cluster Competition called ISC16.

Why do we need your help?

There are two main expenses to competing at the International Student Cluster Competition for ISC16.

  • Finding sponsorship to obtain the parts for the super computer/cluster.
  • Getting to the competition location.

We have managed to secure hardware to be used at ISC16 for our super computer, so we need a way to get to Frankfurt, Germany where the competition will be held. Competing internationally at Germany is costly and not funded by the university. The estimated cost of sending 6 undergraduate students and an adviser is $7,000.

The funds will be used to pay for flight transportation for the team to fly from Boston, MA to Frankfurt, Germany.

How does the competition work?

Student Cluster Competitions gather university teams across the world to optimize high performance computing applications on given data input files to achieve the fastest run time and accuracy under 3,000 watts of power. The competition is all about energy efficiency and the optimizations a team can make within a power budget. Teams are given about 6 applications and input data sets to run with their custom hardware. At the end of the four day competition, teams are given scores that evaluate their results' speed and accuracy. The ISC16 rules are outlined in detail here. Not only is competing internationally a prestigious honor, but it is a great way of applying all the knowledge the team has accumulated and shared up to this point.

Go BU!

We will represent Boston University as the Boston Green Team, and we'll be sure to make BU proud!

Thank you so much! Sincerely,

Huy, Winston, Sean, Satoe, Hannah, Wasim, and the rest of the BUHPC club!
